Glacier Safety

The Matanuska Glacier is an extraordinary place to experience the beauty and adventure of Alaska’s wilderness.  As a professional guiding service operating in a hazardous, variable, glaciated environment, your safety is always our top priority.

There are inherent risks associated with glacier travel. Rocky terrain, slippery ice, and changing weather are just a part of being out there.  Some hazards found on the glacier, such as crevasses, can be dangerous and even deadly.  Our safety standards are based on the fact that rescue from these features is not only difficult and complex but, in some cases, impossible.

Matanuska Glacier’s easy access can create a false sense of safety for inexperienced trekkers. Our guides expertly recognize and manage hazards—both obvious and hidden—to protect the entire group. Simply follow their guidance and enjoy your adventure.
Children: We do not allow children carried in arms, backpacks, strollers, or any other items. Our age limits are based on over 15 years of experience, with your children’s well-being in mind.

Your Responsibilities

Our trained professional guides cannot control all hazards or prevent all risks on the glacier. You must understand and accept the inherent risks of these adventure activities. All participants on our trips must follow our procedures and sign 2 waivers.
One for MICA Guides and one for the private property that we use to access the glacier, or for Sheep Mountain Air if on a helicopter trip.  Only parents or legal guardians may sign for minors. You can preview the combined MICA/Glacier Park Access waiver before your trip using the link provided in your confirmation email or HERE
