Matanuska Glacier Helicopter Ice Climbing

Ever wondered what it feels like to swing an ice tool into a towering wall of glacier ice? This is your chance.

Skip the long hike and fly straight onto the glacier, landing beside some of the most spectacular climbing terrain on the ice. The moment your boots crunch onto the glacier, you’re surrounded by towering ice walls, deep crevasses, and shimmering formations that feel like something from another world.

Your day begins with a hands-on introduction to ice climbing techniques. Our professional guides will walk you through the gear, teach you how to move confidently on the ice, and help you take your first swings on moderate climbing walls. As the day unfolds, you’ll build skills, confidence, and technique—progressing to steeper and more dramatic terrain as you’re ready.

Much of the climbing terrain lies within stunning glacier features like moulins, ice canyons, and towering frozen walls, where climbers are lowered down before beginning their ascent back to the surface. It’s an exhilarating way to experience the glacier—one that blends technical challenge, adventure, and unforgettable scenery.

No previous climbing experience is required, but this trip is physically active and designed for guests looking for a challenging, hands-on glacier experience.

All trip times are approximate and include travel time to and from the glacier. You’ll need lunch for this adventure!

  • Minimum age: 12 years
  • 2-person minimum.

You are welcome to sign up as a solo climber but we reserve the right to cancel the tour if no other guests sign up.  Should this be the case we would give you 5 days notice and a full refund.  This rarely happens but you should understand that it is a possibility.

What to Expect

  • Direct Helicopter flight to and from the glacier
  • A full day on the Matanuska Glacier.
    • Some down time during which your guide will be building anchors and other group members will be climbing.
  • An introduction to climbing gear and proper climbing techniques (climbing boots, crampons, helmets and ice tools provided by MICA Guides)
  • Progression of climbing throughout the day, from beginner bouldering to more challenging and physically demanding walls.

Mountaineering boots are provided from mens sizes 4-14. Please advise us in advance of your trek if you need a size at the large or small end of this range. Please bring your own hiking boots that cover your ankles if you have them, as they are needed for the approach to the climbing areas.

In the wild, the mountains make the rules. For all helicopter expeditions, we operate under strict FAA mandates and our own rigorous safety standards. The pilot will have the final say on every flight. They are experts in these peaks, and their priority is getting you in—and out—safely.

Rain or Shine

We are an all-weather operation. If the pilot gives the “all-clear,” we fly. Be prepared to hike and climb through the mist or rain; in Alaska, that’s often when the glacier looks its most moody and magnificent. Rain isn't a safety factor—only wind and visibility are.

Rescheduling & the “Reserve” Reality

If the weather closes in and the pilot cancels or significantly delays your flight, we will do everything in our power to reschedule you. However, because our helicopters and guides stay fully booked, we don’t have a “reserve” waiting in the wings—meaning a Sunday cancellation doesn’t guarantee a Monday opening.

Our Commitment to You

  • Weather Cancellation: If we can’t fly and can’t reschedule, you receive a full refund.
  • The “Hike-In” Pivot: Occasionally, we can convert your trip into a hike-in adventure with the same guide, refunding you the price difference.
  • The Good News: Over 95% of our helicopter trips go exactly as planned. Glacier View is famous for having some of the most stable, flyable weather in the state—making us one of the most reliable launches in Alaska.

For Ice Climbing we require you to have:

  • A small backpack with room for gear. If you don’t have one, we have some available for you to use!
  • Long pants
  • Sunglasses
  • Long sleeve shirt (preferably not cotton)
  • Long synthetic or wool socks
  • Plastic mountaineering boots are provided from men’s sizes 4–14. Please advise us in advance of your trek if you need a size at the large or small end of this range.
  • Please bring your own hiking boots that cover your ankles if you have them, as they are needed for the approach to the climbing areas.

Our recommendations on clothing and gear:

  • Quick dry clothing (not cotton). Usually a good pair of hiking pants works great. Ski pants and jackets are not necessary.
  • Tall socks
  • Rain gear, even if it isn’t raining
  • Liner gloves
  • Extra warm layers
  • Lunch, snacks, and water
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera
  • Bear Spray
  • Firearms
  • Alcohol
