Summertime at the Matanuska Glacier is an excellent time to try the vertical world of ice climbing. Our step by step approach ensures professional instruction in the art and technical aspects of ice climbing.

You can get started without any prior climbing or trekking experience.

You begin on moderate ice slopes and later use your skills to explore the glacier and challenge yourself on more vertical walls. Trips will accommodate different skill levels so bring the whole family.

Trips depart at 10 am daily.

Alaska Ice climbing is a great team building activity. Special group rates for tours, corporate teams, scouts, youth groups and other programs.

"I did the ice climbing...I didn’t expect I could do it, but I had a great day and it was an unbelievable challenge.
It was the most exciting thing I did on my trip in Alaska."
-- Esther L., The Netherlands

Ice Climbing is designed for beginners but we can make the challenge suitable for just about everyone. No experience needed.

We start out teaching you the basics on moderate slopes and by the end of the day you'll be scaling vertical walls of ice!

You do not need to be a super athlete to enjoy this adventure. We'll teach you the techniques, which are more important than brute strength. If you can climb a ladder, you can ice climb!

Tons of fun, fantastic photo opportunities and a great Alaskan adventure.

Cost: $130 per person plus Park Entry Fee,
2 person minimum.
Traveling alone? We can often add you to a group, but if not you can still enjoy this trip for $200.

Or have our introductory course exclusively for you or your small group. Stay at a lodge or camp nearby and make this a multi-day learning opportunity. You can gear your trip toward exploring the glacier or climbing the many different ice walls. No experience necessary.

Cost per day: $250 for 1 person $130 for each additional person. (Plus Park Entry Fee)
Duration: 6 - 8 hours per day
Minimum: Age 12 years.

Custom Climbs may be arranged for groups with younger children but climbing may be limited due to safety concerns.

Yes, you will see many of the glacier features while traveling to the ice climbing area.

Some people ask if they can "go along" to watch their friend ice climb. We've found that this usually does not work out very successfully for various reasons. If your group is split on those that would like to climb and those that would prefer to just trek, we suggest that you all start in the morning and that the trekkers just enjoy a nice lunch and perhaps a hike or drive in the area while waiting for the climbers to finish up their day.

If you would like to go along on the ice climb, we suggest you sign up for the trip. You need only climb as much as you like...you might really enjoy it!

Trip duration times are approximate and do not include transportation time from our Base to and from the glacier.

MICA Guides was created so we could share a very special part of the Alaskan experience. Glaciers are responsible for shaping and forming this great land, and Alaska has more than one thousand of these frozen rivers.

Join us for our 10th year on the Matanuska Glacier.

We're the local pros that live and breathe "The Mat". Whether you're interested in an introductory hike or technical support for your film project, our expertise, local knowledge and Operations Base overlooking the glacier are second to none.
