Private Advanced Trek — Explore the Matanuska Glacier Beyond the Crowds

Step into the remote backcountry of the Matanuska Glacier on a fully private Advanced Trek, designed for groups who want more challenge, more solitude, and a day shaped entirely around them.

This demanding yet rewarding adventure blends glacier hiking with rope-assisted scrambles, allowing you to climb non-vertical ice walls, approach dramatic crevasses, and explore rare glacial features that are only accessible with proper technical equipment and expert guidance. Your guide sets the pace, chooses the route, and tailors the experience to your group’s interests—whether that’s pushing your limits, learning advanced glacier travel skills, or capturing unforgettable photos in a truly remote setting.

Accessing this terrain requires a challenging 2-mile hike across uneven glacial moraine, rewarding you with solitude, sweeping views, and some of the most spectacular ice the Matanuska has to offer. This is a private, immersive glacier expedition for adventurous travelers who want the deepest possible connection to Alaska’s living ice.

Tour Details:

  • Minimum age: 10 years old
  • Must be able to walk at a brisk pace over uneven terrain
  • Push deeper into the glacier with a private guide and a fully tailored advanced trek
  • We can accommodate even larger parties. For example, book two private trips to include up to 8 guests.

*Our Private Advanced Trek fee does not include the Glacier Park Access Fee, which must be paid upon Check-In at the MICA Base. See Glacier Access for more details and estimated rates.*

About the Moraine Hike

We’ve learned that climbing and any technical exploring using rope systems in “the backcountry” offers a superior experience for our guests. Access to the backcountry requires a demanding 2 mile hike over uneven glacial moraine to the best climbing terrain the Matanuska has to offer.

Depending on your group’s ability and pace, this hike takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half and involves walking over loose rocks, muddy ice, and steep slopes. While strenuous, this hike allows our groups to escape the larger crowds on the lower glacier and access some of the most dramatic terrain the Matanuska has to offer.

Of course safety is our top priority so if your Guide determines that you or your group may not make it to the backcountry and return in a reasonable time the trip will be adjusted and will not include any use of ropes.

We’ll do our best to provide an enjoyable glacier experience but no refunds or price adjustments will be made.

  • A full day on the Matanuska Glacier, including 2-3 hours of demanding moraine hiking and 3-4 hours of stunning white ice exploration (total time on moraine vs. white ice depends on group ability and pace). In total, guests can expect to hike approximately 6 miles on this trip.
  • Guided exploration of exciting glacial features and stunning views in a remote area of the Matanuska Glacier
  • A faster-paced, smaller group than the Ice Fall Trek [1:4]
  • A closer look at spectacular glacial features including, crevasses, moulins, deep canyons, blue pools, and (potentially) ice caves
For the Advanced Trek we require you to have:
  • A backpack with room for gear. If you don’t have one, we have some available for you to use!
  • Long Pants
  • Hiking boots that come over your ankle. If you don’t own a pair, we have some available for your use!
  • Quick dry clothing (not cotton/jeans). Usually a good pair of hiking pants works great. Ski pants and jackets are not necessary
  • Rain gear, even if it isn’t raining
  • Tall synthetic or wool socks
  • Extra warm layers
  • Snacks and lunch
  • Thin Liner gloves if your hands get cold. You do not need ski gloves
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
Our recommendations on clothing and gear:
  • Yes you can bring your camera!
  • Colorful clothing makes for better photos!
Do not bring:
  • Bear Spray
  • Fire Arms
  • Alcohol
Accessing the backcountry requires a demanding 2-mile hike across uneven glacial moraine to reach the best climbing terrain on the Matanuska. Depending on your group’s pace and conditions, this approach typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours and involves loose rock, muddy ice, and steep slopes. This effort is what allows us to escape the crowds and reach the glacier’s most dramatic and remote features. Safety is always our top priority. If your guide determines that reaching the backcountry and returning safely is not feasible, the itinerary will be adjusted and may not include rope-assisted exploration. No refunds or price adjustments will be made in these cases.
